What I don't get about this game is what age group it's trying to target, I'd assume a 4-5 year old would be learning these basics, but why would a 4 or 5 year old want to play chess? Anyway, there are mini games to play such as I spy or catch the correct shapes, and you earn stars which can be used to design your own castle one section at a time. and choosing the correct directions, left, right, up down over and under. This includes selecting the correct shapes, squares, triangle etc. The beginning of the game starts out with very simple tasks with the host being a cartoon mouse named Cheddar. I'm Baffled I understand this is a game designed to teach kids the basics of playing chess, however, I just don't think it's fun. It has whet my interest in more sophisticated lessons and game play. Meanwhile I'm enjoying a $2.99 game which is reacquainting me with an old friend. It is an excellent chess primer Kids are sponges and you'd be surprised how quickly they'll pick up chess. I would highly recommend it to anyone with a young (and up) child. You can see how it's cleverly teaching chess play later in the game. The sections are short and you move right along.

In the earliest very brief chapters you learn colors, shapes, vertical/horizontal. You win stars to improve your castle BUT make no mistake, it's a game for children, maybe four years and up The colors, characters and music are light and cheerful with lots of encouragement for young players (and me!). I played the trial and bought it without hesitation. It's definitely not like riding a bicycle Years later when I played against a computer, I was positively awful, after just few moves, checkmate! Disheartening. It had move by move commentary and I was transfixed. (No more!) Actually, I'm old enough to remember the 1972 televised World Chess Championship match between Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky.

I learned the game years ago and became pretty good at it.

For $2.99, I'm enjoying it, too.Ĭhess is a wonderful game of strategy, concentration and depth. Future Chess Grandmaster in the family The children's game teaches basic elements of chess.
